Letting Go of Expectations
Through Facebook live and YouTube videos, Justin Thorstad continues to share tips for elevating one’s life based on his own experience and mindset shift practices. In one video, Justin shares the importance of letting go of expectations and instead focusing on the end result to achieve success.
Justin shares that during his regular meditation recently, he was struggling to really get into it. He couldn’t concentrate and his body was tense and fidgety. He was acutely aware of it but wasn’t sure what was causing it… until a few days later when he was doing another part of his daily practice (which he highly recommends) — an ice bath.
He says those ice baths times really allow those “a-ha” moments to reveal themselves and this instance was no different. During that time, Justin realized his mind was quiet and his body was calm. He was able to recognize the areas in which he was feeling stressed and uneasy. When he began to look at all three areas in which he was experiencing those low emotions, he discovered that the problem was the same in all three — expectations.
Justin says he was expecting certain results and expecting things to unfold a certain way for him to feel as though he was really making progress. And those expectations caused him to start feeling the anxiety and stress of not seeing his wishes fulfilled. The problem was he was focusing too much on the expectation and not enough on the end result.
Instead of letting those old ways of thinking resurface and steer the ship, Justin reminds people to use their metacognition to realize how they think, act and feel. The quicker they can do that, the quicker they can make course corrections to get back on track. In this instance, Justin says expectations are actually a waste of time, energy and focus.
He encourages people to take a step back and instead of focusing on exactly how the path should look on the way to the end result, to simply get crystal clear on envisioning that end result. Because it doesn’t really matter what it took to get there (so long as it was legal and ethical!). What does matter is achieving that goal.
Based on this experience, Justin encourages people to let go of the expectation and just get started on their journey to their goal. Just get into action, start moving towards that goal and manifest the end result. Once again, he reminds people to forget expectations and get crystal clear on what that end result looks and feels like.
He notes that expectations can actually strangle the progress of success and references a quote his friend shared with him: “The looser the grip, the tighter the hold.” With that in mind, Justin realized he was strangling his process by setting expectations and holding on too tight to those expectations. He encourages others to learn from his experience and instead of getting attached to expectations, let them go.
